Falling Film

Intube Falling Film Evaporators

A key factor in the successful operation of an intube falling film evaporator is the uniform distribution of feed to all tubes and the uniformity of flow around the periphery of the tubes.

The film shown to the left was formed using only an orifice plate located above the tubesheet. This film is unacceptable due to poor fluid distribution and random film breaks around the periphery of the tube.

The falling film shown to the right uses the same orifice plate but with the tubes extended above the tubesheet. This M & L innovation adds nothing to the cost of the unit with the resultant film being uniform and stable. Heat transfer to the thin film is high with a holdup and time of contact low which is of great advantage in handling heat sensitive liquids. Evaporation at very low absolute pressures is possible since there is no hydrostatic head to affect the boiling temperature. All M & L distribution devices are tested in our research laboratory prior to production.

This film was formed using only an orifice plate located above the tubesheet.		The film shown uses the same orifice plate but with the tubes extended above the tubesheet.

SUCTION BELLS & SUCTION HEATERS

M & L Suction Bells are important accessories in any oil burning system, upon which the success or failure of the entire system may depend. Their function is to pre-warm the oil in cold weather so as to permit pumping to the oil heater. They are economical units, very simply installed within the storage tank.

M & L Suction Bells are, in effect, localized heating devices with piping connections arranged so that the oil is withdrawn and excess heated oil is returned through it. This combination of coil heating, using steam or hot water, and the return of the excess heated oil from the oil pre-heater and burner system, affords localized heating without wasteful heating of the entire tank contents.

In some instances, the return of hot oil, in itself, yields a sufficient source of heat so that the suction bells can be used without coils. They serve simply as focal points for tank connections and as reservoirs of heated oil returned to the tank from the pre-heater and burner system.

TANK OUTLET HEATERS INSTALLED IN THE OIL STORAGE TANK
For capacities beyond those obtainable with M & L suction bells, M & L tank outlet heaters are frequently used, being installed wholly within the tank. Ratings for tank outlet heaters can be obtained from our engineering department.

When tank outlet heaters are placed inside the oil storage tank they are usually installed through the manhole with the piping brought up through the manhole cover. The hot oil return, in such an installation, is brought to the open end of the heater, where it is immediately drawn into the heater for recirculation.

M&L Suction Bells are inexpensive heaters which can be installed without requiring special connection details in the tank itself. Heaters are arranged to provide localized heating only at the point of withdrawal of the oil.

The M&L Suction Bell so installed forms the terminal point for the oil suction and oil return from all burners. all connections for oil, steam and condensate, or boiler water should be made as shown in the diagram.

The advantage of ease of installation of the suction bell can be provided for high capacity installation by installing and M & L Tank Outlet Heater wholly within the oil storage tank as shown in the diagram below.

When installing Suction Bells or Tank Outlet Heaters, Contractors frequently find it convenient to attach all the vertical piping runs outside of the tank, then lowering the entire assembly through the manhole. Piping can then continue from the the vertical runs to the boiler room in the usual manner.

These compact units are exclusive M&L developments, particularly recommended for high steam or oil pressures. Due to the high turbulence of oil achieved by the transverse baffling, these heaters have high capacities per square foot.

Operation: Oil is outside the tubes in turbulent flow transverse to the bundle while the steam is inside the tubes

Construction: Shell, tubes, tube sheets and baffles are steel. Heads are cast iron or steel. While heavy gauge steel tubing is standard, non-ferrous tubes can be furnished on special order. The tube bundle can be easily removed by merely taking off a single set of flange bolts.
